Poetry as Healer: Mending the Troubled Mind
Jack J. Leedy, M.D., ed. NY: The Vanguard Press, 1985.
This is a classic book about poetry therapy edited by NAPT's pioneer, our beloved Jack Leedy, M.D. The text is divided into the Why, How, and Where of poetry therapy by noted authors in the field including Dr. Leedy, Morris R. Morrison, Aaron Kramer, and Art Berger. The essays give the reader a thorough understanding and appreciation of how poetry heals, and why it is "the royal road to the unconscious."

Giving Sorrow Words:
Anthology-Resource in Use Nationwide
Giving Sorrow Words is an outgrowth of the many poems received and posted by the National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT) in September, 2001. The organization received such positive feedback to poems posted on its website that it decided to produce an anthology in print.
The collection is edited by publication chair, Karen vanMeenen of Rochester NY, and special projects chair, Charlie Rossiter of Oak Park, IL, along with Kathleen Adams who provided the Preface. The NAPT Foundation funded the first printing of 2000 copies. The Taub foundation and individual donors funded the second printing.
The anthology includes original poems by internationally renowned poets such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Poet Laureate Billy Collins, Ellen Bass, Robert Bly, Lucille Clifton, Denise Levertov, Naomi Shihab Nye and others. It also includes a guide for individuals and helping professionals which explains how reading, discussing and writing poetry can be beneficial for healing and personal growth. Finally, the book concludes with brief commentary and writing activities tied to each individual poem.

The book is being distributed free. Postage and handling is $3 per book for U.S. shipment, $5 per book for shipment outside the U.S., payable in U.S. funds only. Request copies in writing, accompanied by appropriate postage in the form of a check made out to "NAPT Foundation/GSW" and mailed to:
