More About Giving Sorrow Words

In selecting poems the editors employed the criteria used for selecting poems for use in poetry therapy groups: clarity; straightforward diction; universality of theme; striking imagery; and manageable length. Almost all of the poems are less than one page long. Although inspired by the events of September 11, the collection is not tied to those specific events. Rather it is a collection of poetic resources that might be helpful for dealing with grief, loss, or tragedy of any sort.

Copies have thus far been distributed to New York state victims' assistance counselors and other helping professionals around Manhattan. They are also being used at the Boston Trauma Center with families of victims on flights from Boston on 9/11. In Washington, DC they are being used in a variety of counseling contexts.

The book has served as the basis for a discussion program in the Oak Park, IL public library. In Tallahassee, Florida, it is in use at the Big Bend Hospice. Therapists are using the book in grief and loss support groups in: Colorado Springs, CO; Charleston, SC; Mitchell NC; and Glens Falls, NY. In Minneapolis, it is being distributed through the Red Cross to families in their organ and tissue donor program. In Coral Springs, FL, members of the Police and Fire Departments are reading and discussing the book. In Chicago, Smoke & Mirrors Productions has developed and staged a theatrical production based on poems from the book.
