Advances in the Practice Base of Poetry Therapy

with Dr. Nicholas Mazza

The focus of this workshop will be on a review, application, and discussion of the three central components in Mazza’s (1999/2003) R.E.S. model of poetry therapy. The receptive/prescriptive (R) component involves the introduction of poetic material (e.g., poems, song lyrics, and short stories) in a practice situation. The expressive/creative (E) component involves the use of writing (e.g., poetry, journal writing, and letters) in therapeutic capacities. The symbolic/ceremonial (S) component involves the use of metaphors, storytelling, and rituals as healing agents. Poetry therapy, the use of the language arts in therapeutic capacities, will be addressed with respect to individual, family, and group practice. The workshop will be both didactic and experiential.
